Business in Focus, The Greenhouse - Meet the Makers

Meet the Makers – Sara from Mermaid Cove Organics

I enjoy photographing and supporting many green beauty brands, but for sometime now, I’ve wanted to dive deeper into getting to know the makers and creators. What drives them, what is their Why? So I’m excited to share my first interview with the Founder of Mermaid Cove Organics. A beautiful online store featuring a range of small batch products from some amazing brands!

Head Mermaid, Sara, Founder of Mermaid Cove Organics

I remember when Mermaid Cove Organics started up their Instagram. I was so intrigued as to what this new business would be offering, I eagerly anticipated the launch of their online shop, enjoying snippets of what to expect and what brands they would stock.

Mermaid Cove Organics live and breathe the following 4 core values when selecting who they will stock in their online store. Those core values are; sustainability, honesty, quality and love. I loved reading under the Sustainability Core Value that they use Australia’s first carbon neutral shipping company, Sendle, to ship your orders!

Now, I hope you have a cup of warm herbal tea, in my case I’m enjoying a warm glass of Almond Milk with some Glow Milk from the Balanced Pantry (which can be purchased from here), as this interview with Sara is extremely insightful and uplifting!

R. Hi Sara! Thank you so much for answering a few questions about your little business baby, and featuring in our first ever Business in Focus interview!

I wanted to start by asking you, what lead you to starting Mermaid Cove Organics.

S. I was using skin care products that weren’t very well-known and were all handmade by creative and passionate people. I felt there wasn’t really a shop where people who wanted to use unique, natural & hand-made products from small brands could go to, so I started one myself.

Mermaid Cove Organics is very much a venture that is close to my heart. It’s a passion for sharing niche small-batch products which tell a story and are lovingly made by hand. I think you feel it on your skin when you use products that are handcrafted, there is just something very special about them.

Education on skin care ingredients is also something that is important to me. I want to educate our customers, so they can make informed decisions when choosing what to put on their skin, so our blog is an important part of the business as well.

R. I love that, I agree with you 100%, education is so important. Especially on ingredients and how they are can often be referred to as organic/natural when in fact in could be the 1 out of 20 ingredients that is natural.

Inspiration is so important to me, especially when photographing products. What inspires you each day?

S. I am inspired by nature and by passionate and loving people. I have lots of plants around me in my home and try to spend as much time as I can near the ocean. There is an abundance of beauty in the natural world and sharing the amazing benefits natural ingredients have on our skin & wellbeing inspires me every day.

I’m also very lucky to have wonderful friends and a very supportive fiancé who love natural and skin and wellbeing products. I truly enjoy sharing thoughts and ideas for Mermaid Cove Organics with them.

R. It’s wonderful to hear that you have such a close-knit community around you to bounce ideas off for the business. Sometimes you just need to talk an idea through, even if it is the middle of the night! Next I want to talk about gratitude, this is extremely close to me. How do you practice gratitude?

S. I aim to take a few minutes every morning and acknowledge what I am thankful for. It helps me set the mood for the day and puts a smile on my face, so even when things go wrong later in the day, I can think back on all the things I was grateful for in the morning.

I also like to incorporate some mindful gratitude into my daily skin care routine. Taking care of my skin is being appreciative and thankful for the body I get to live in.

R. I also often tell my friends and family the gratitude rule, of picking 3 things from the day you are grateful for. You are spot on for including it!

How important is the use of Natural and Organic ingredients to you and your brand?

S. The more I learn, the more important using 100% natural products becomes. Learning about natural and organic ingredients was a journey I have been on for a very long time and will continue to be on.

With our brands it’s more important to me to know where ingredients are sourced from, how they are processed and the communities the trade of those ingredients support, than whether they are certified.

The process of getting certified is lengthy and expensive, so I acknowledge that when deciding which brands to include in our shop. There are some wonderful products that are made from 100% natural and organic ingredients, but they are not always certified.

R. What are you favourite products from your shop and are you working on anything new and exciting?

S. We select each product we have in our store with much care and I try everything first before adding it to our shop, so they are all unique and lovely to me.

However, I do very much love the ylang ylang Coffee Scrub from our Hawaiian brand ‘ili skincare, it leaves my skin super soft and smells amazing. I also love showering with our Sea Salt Soaps – my favourite scent is Orange Blossom, it smells like pure happiness to me!

We have some beautiful new brands coming soon and I’m very excited to share them with all our customers

Thank you again Sara! I’ve loved being part of your journey so far and can’t wait to see where the future takes you and Mermaid Cove Organics.

To my friends, I hope you have enjoyed my first Business in Focus interview. I’d love any feedback that you have to share. Lets talk!
