Meet the Makers – Kailah from MG Naturals

Good afternoon friends, and happy Sunday! I hope everyone is enjoying their long weekend. Did you watch the AFL Grand Final yesterday? I didn’t but I thought there would be many who are so decided to delay the posting of this week’s Meet the Makers!

Today we are chatting with Kailah from MG Naturals. I met Kailah close to a year ago in a Facebook group for business women, aptly called “Like Minded Bitches Drinking Wine” which is a wonderful community of women supporting women!

MG Naturals is one of those brands I really love, creating wonderful make up & skincare products that are vegan, organic and 100% titanium dioxide free. Which is great news for your skin considering what we apply to our bodies is absorbed into it.

MG Naturals have a range of products from vegan brushes, foundation, bronzer to lipstick and mascara. Kailah also loves feedback and suggestions on future products, if you have a great idea you can contact her here.

R. Welcome Kailah to Meet the Makers! It’s been wonderful watching the brand grow! Tell us, what made you decide to start MG Naturals?

K. Becoming a Mama led me to start my business, the MG actually stands for Mama Going Natural. Before my daughter was born I assumed that all products sold in stores must be safe, otherwise you wouldn’t be able to sell them, right?! Boy was I shocked to find all the chemicals & toxins that were in products that my family used every single day.

I couldn’t find any makeup brands that I was 100% happy with, so out of necessity MG Naturals was born to create safe, natural products for my family & friends, it actually took off quite by accident! There was such a demand for safe, honest makeup!

R. I always wondered what the MG stood for! That is very cool! It’s amazing the demand for safe, green make up and skincare and I believe as Australian Makers we are leading the way in producing great quality green products!

How & why are organic ingredients important to your brand?

K. Organic natural ingredients are the cornerstone of our brand. If I won’t put an ingredient on my sweet babies skin I wouldn’t include it in our products. If we can’t make a product to our exacting standards of purity & safety then we just don’t make it.

We want people to know they can trust us, the green beauty sector can be a mine field of mis-information & green washing so we like to think we stand as a beacon for people to trust & believe in, they can safely order our products & know we don’t use any nasties, ever!

img_3269

R. Argh green washing is so common and it drives me mad! It’s true, as consumers we don’t have massive amounts of time to be reading through ingredient lists so you think you can trust what the packaging says – unfortunately it’s not always the case.

Are you currently working on anything or any new products about to launch?

K. We have so many new & exciting products in the pipeline. We are constantly testing out new formulations & playing with makeup. Formulating green makeup can take a lot longer as we try to recreate the look, feel & function of big brand makeup just without all the nasties. We have so many products in various stages of testing & production: a fuller coverage solid foundation, lip n cheek colour pots, a full coverage colour-correcting concealer palette, liquid eyeliner & we want to get into pressed powder products later in the year.

R. Oh the lip n cheek colour pots sound exciting – well it all does! I can see how the formulation process can take a little longer than traditional methods.

Do you have any tips for those who are wanting to move away from mainstream make up brands and into safe and vegan alternatives?

K. It can be expensive (but very worthwhile for your health) moving into green beauty & tossing out all your non-green makeup.

To make it easier on your wallet I recommend starting with your foundation or BB cream as these products are often used every day & are being absorbed into your skin. Then I’d look at your lip products as we inadvertently consume a lot of lipstick & lip balm overtime. Those would be the products I would worry about first & then everything else can be swapped out as they start to run out. But just changing those products alone will reduce the amount of toxins & chemicals your exposed to each day.

img_3271

R. It’s amazing just how much lip balm/stick we consume without even knowing it. I seem to go through so much of it, so ensuring what I use is natural is extremely important to me.

Where do you draw inspiration from each day?

K. I am inspired by my children, they are my greatest teachers. My eldest Aleena is zen, nothing much rattles her, so she reminds me not to sweat the small stuff. My toddler Lexi is bolshy & fearless & does not accept No for an answer, she inspires me to be brave & go after what I want. And our latest addition Baby Aubree is never-ending happy, she wakes up smiling and smiles her way through the day, she reminds me of the pure delight of being alive even when your seriously sleep deprived!!

R. That is so beautiful! They say that kids really are our greatest teachers. I’ve actually been trying to include more child-like play into my life. Things we did as kids that brought so much delight, like rolling down this massive hill at work. People were asking why I did it and I thought why not? It was actually so much fun and left me grinning from ear-to-ear!

What is your favourite part of the day?

K. My absolute favourite part of the day is working at my desk & watching my girls play on the fort in the backyard. Sometimes being a Mama & running a business can be a bit of a hard gig. But when I look at my girls, I know it’s all worthwhile because one day they will be wearing makeup &I don’t want any nasties on those precious little faces.

img_3268

R. Finally, as the Maker of such wonderful products, tell us – what does your beauty routine look like?

K. Being a Mama of three (with two being under two) my beauty routine is very parred back at the moment. Alone time in the bathroom is a foregone conclusion in our house so I have to get ready to face the world in a matter of minutes. I always start with our BB Cream in luminous light because that’s my moisturiser, sunscreen & makeup all in one. I then like to apply a few coats of our Organic Volume Mascara because I love lashes & then a swipe of our Wild Rose lipstick and I’m ready for the school run. I used to wear foundation but now that I have no time for skincare I have swapped to the BB as its my moisturiser, serum, sunscreen & makeup in one easy 30 second application (leaving me more time to apply my mascara!).

img_3270

R. Oh the ever precious mascara! I don’t know what I would do without it, I love it. Something so simple, that can make you look and feel like you’ve slept for a solid 12 hours – ha!

Thank you again for joining us Kailah. I’m excited for what’s on the horizon for you and will be keeping close eye on the lip and cheek pots!

You can find Kailah’s bright and cheery website here and also reach out to her on Instagram via @mgnaturals.

I’d also love to know who you would like to see interviewed next, feel free to let me know!

Have a wonderful week!

June Empties

A short blog to talk about the June empties. Not too much to report, I finished 4 products. Those 4 products are as follows;

  • Mario Badescu A.H.A Botanical Soap
  • The Ordinary Foundation
  • Tarte Lights Camera Lashes
  • Drunk Elephant Beste No.9 Jelly Cleanser

img_7620

Drunk Elephant Beste No.9 Jelly Cleanser – Mecca Maxima
Out of the 4, I would most likely repurchase 3 of the 4 products. Unfortunately I have used other cleansers that I prefer over the Beste No.9 Jelly Cleanser. I have mentioned previously, I do wear quite heavy eye make up and when looking for a cleanser I am looking for something that can generally remove it.

I also found the texture too jelly like and not very oily, again something I look for to remove my eye makeup.

I do love Drunk Elephants packaging though, easy to use and the screw top lid makes it easy to not be wasteful. Plus how cute is the bright packaging!

Verdict – I will not be repurchasing

Mario Bedescu A.H.A Botanical Soap – Mecca Maxima
I absolutely LOVE the Mario Bedescu A.H.A Botanical Soap, it smells lovely and doesn’t bubble too much.

It has such a pleasant scent also, and after using my body feels refreshed and clean.

It is quite pricey for the size, I think from memory it was $12-$14? However it’s reasonable if this was a splurge item you were picking up.

Verdict – I will repurchase (when I can splurge)

Lights, Cameras, Lashes by Tarte – Sephora
Even with all the Tarte drama of previous months, this is still one of my favourite mascaras. It is a great formula that is hard to smudge, doesn’t drop onto the under eyes as the day progresses and is also easy enough to remove.

This packaging was from the Limited Edition Christmas Mascara.

Verdict – I will repurchase

The Ordinary Coverage Foundation – Deciem, South Yarra
This little bottle packs a real punch and definitely one of my favourite foundations. It has quickly replaced NARS on my love list, especially since NARS decided to sell in China for a quick buck.

I do find the coverage quite light though, and don’t agree its full coverage. In saying that, I like to wear this foundation during the day for that reason.

Verdict – I will repurchase

I hope you enjoyed this quick little blog on my June empties! Let me know your thoughts.

My Favourite “Green” Products

I can honestly say, hand to heart, I am utterly obsessed with skincare.
The pretty packaging, the magic statements “reduce fine lines” and “youthful appearance” all have me hooked-plus did I mention the pretty packaging?

Over a year ago I became a pescatarian and as part of that journey started to look closely at what I was actually putting into my body and onto it.

All the products listed below do not test on animals, which to me is a major selling point.
Why companies still feel the need to do this is beyond me, however that’s a story for another time kids!

Now the fun part, below are my must have “Green” beauty products!

Malie Organics (pronounced Mah-lee-ay) – http://www.malie.com

Ah, where do I even begin to describe these products? In June I visited Honolulu, Hawaii to celebrate by 30th birthday. I popped into their store located in the Royal Hawaiian (other stores located in Kauai, and also the Ala Moana Centre in Honolulu).
The store is beautifully presented and the Assistant was very knowledgable.

Malie Organics was founded in 2004 by Dana Roberts and her husband. The company is committed to sustainability, preservation of the environment and actively seek ways to reduce their carbon footprint.

Aside from having great company values, their products rock too!
I am OBSESSED with the Kōke’e Beauty Oil. This is a dream. It is a light weight oil, that will leave the skin hydrated with a slight scent. The scent reminds me of long days spent sipping Blue Hawaiians by the beach!
The Kōke’e Body Gloss leaves your skin glowing. I love how both the products are light and don’t weigh your skin down. Perfect to use after a day spent lying on the beach!

Farmacy Beauty – http://www.farmacybeauty.com

Unfortunately, Farmacy Beauty is not currently sold here in Australia. I was desperate to get my hands on a few of their products as I have heard such great things.

Mark Veeder discovered and patented “Echinacea GreenEnvy” which is one of the key ingredients in Farmacy’s products. Mark has partnered with Robert Beyfuss who is an expert in farming.

My favourite Pharmacy Beauty product by far, is their Green Screen.
Green Screen is a broad spectrum SPF 30, however unlike other sunscreens that are thick and hard to smooth into the face, this is light and so easy to wear under sunscreen.

Tata Harper – www.tataharperskincare.com.au
“I want to create beauty products that meet the standards of the modern woman; luxurious, effective and nontoxic – Tata Harper, co CEO”
Quote taken from http://www.tataharperskincare.com

After Tata Harper’s stepfather was diagnosed with cancer, Tata Harper, took the time to review her lifestyle and seek healthy alternatives for herself and her family.
All the ingredients used in the products are grown on the company’s farm in Vermont, America.

I recently picked up the Purifying Cleanser. Wow! This ginger packed bottle of goodness leaves the skin feeling fresh and tingly all over. It smells divine and I love using this in the morning as a pick me up to clear the head and prepare me for the day ahead!

I purchased my Purifying Cleanser from Eve Organics http://www.eveorganics.com.au

Leah Lani Skincare – http://www.leahlaniskincare.com
“I set off to to create a line of skincare that would transform a routine into a ritual” – Leah Lani, creator
Quote taken from http://www.leahlaniskincare.com

I love the Leah Lani Skincare story. By trusting her intuition, Leah and her husband packed their bags and moved to Maui so she could study at Spa Luna. Several years later and with a clear intention, Leah was able to create this gorgeous brand that continues to inspire those seeking clearer skin.

Not only is the packaging the sweetest but you can really feel the love every time you open the jar of her Mermaid Mask. Yes it can be messy, but no one ever said skincare was clean right?
#cleanbeauty

I was quite surprised the consistency of this mask, I even had my mask brush at the ready but I found it best applied with your fingers and a little water. Rinse from the skin and before you know it you are a mermaid, not quite, but your skin will be just like Ariel’s from the Little Mermaid!

I purchased my Mermaid Mask from I Am Natural Store http://www.iamnaturalstore.com.au

Fresh – http://www.fresh.com

I was unsure if I should include this mask as although I love it, the brand technically isn’t cruelty free. Although the company does not test on animals,  unless permitted by law. Which means, for instance if sold in China then testing is required by the Chinese government and the business wishing needs to fund that. It’s surprising as the Fresh website seems to no longer reference this so perhaps their stance has changed ad they no longer sell to China?

What I really love about this mask, apart from the packaging – their marketing team are ace, is the real bits of orange and citrus you can see. It’s a lovely texture also, that stays put on the skin and doesn’t melt off.
After I remove the mask my skin feels refreshed and ready to party!

Tell me, what are your favourite “Green” products? I’d love to chat about this!
